This is the link to an episode of 'The Gadget Show' which shows the two presenters competing against each other to make a music video. One uses high quality equipment to shoot her music video, while the other uses cheaper store priced equipment in order to make a budget music video.

Me and Lauren watched this episode in class in order to help us understand how to make our music video without having to spend too much money or even better none at all.

Researching different styles of music video

Narrative: This is when there is a clear storyline which relates to what the song is about and the lyrics of the song. This is usually used in songs that want to display emotion; typically slow sad songs or love songs.

Nickelback - Lullaby (2012)

This tells the story of a man who loses his wife in childbirth and is left alone with his son. He finds it hard to cope and thinks about putting him up for adoption. In the end there is a happy ending as the man realises he is happy and can cope on his own. This is a great example of a narrative music video as it envokes emotion within anyone that watches it.

Performance: This is when the video shows the band or singer performing, usually staged as a concert but can be set anywhere. Many rock and metal bands use this method as it shows of their talents such as guitar and drum skills.

Black Veil Brides - Fallen Angels (2011)

This video shows the band perfoming in a desolate area with a crowd of people watching them play. This is a clear example of a performance music video as all it shows is the band performing their song. This allows the band to become more noticed as they appear in their music video as opposed to having a narrative with different actors in the video.

 

Abstract: This is when the video has absolutely nothing to do with the song or the lyrics. This style is typically found in club music as many of these songs don’t have lyrics; just fast paced beats.

Creed - With arms wide open (2000)

This music video is abstract in the way that the video doesn't relate to the lyrics or the message of the song. The singer wrote this song after he heard the news that he was going to be a father and so wrote this song for his son. The video doesn't shown any recognition of this, but insted shows the singer being hit at by metorites. A narrative would have worked better with this song in my opinion as it would have made the song more personal and emotional.

'The Only Exception' by Paramore - Why we chose it

Why we chose this song:

In our group our music tastes are very much different, so choosing a song to turn into a music video was a challenge. In the end we decided on ‘The Only Exception’ by Paramore as it was a song we both liked and felt we could put a great narrative story to it. The song itself is a great song that I and Lauren both enjoy listening to, so doing a music video for it will be fun and keep us more interested as opposed to doing a song we both hate.

Why we chose to have our music video as a narrative:

We decided that a narrative music video would best fit the sound and lyrics of the song, as the song is about finding that one person you cannot live without. We chose to have a storyline involving our friends as the actresses as they are a couple. This was beneficial as it gave the video real emotion as they do love each other and not just acting.

The Only Exception by Paramore

This the original music video for 'The Only Exception'. We didn't want our video to look the same so we were sure to analyse the original video in order for there to be no simularites. I feel that our music video is different from the original, even though it does share slight simularites such as the theme of love and finding the one you can't live without.

Storyboard with music

Here is our storyboard running along with our music choice 'The Only Exception' by Paramore. This helps us to plan and organise ourselves before filming the real music video. This way we will get the filming done quickly and then be able to edit.

The Only Exception song lyrics annotated

I printed off the lyrics to the song The Only Exception by Paramore, so that me and my media partner could annotate the words and be sure our music video storyline matched the words of the song. We also matched each shot from our storyboard to a verse in the song, this was so we could match up our timings and make sure our video wasn't over 4.27 minutes as thats how long the song is. 

Mind Map of the music video

This is a mind map of the initial ideas for our music video. We have chosen the song The Only Exception by Paramore and hope to make a narrative video which will run parallel with the song. We want the music video to tell a romance story of two people moving in together despite their concerns and worries. I have listed on this mind map which camera shots we hope to have in our filming and areas such as props, costume and location so that we can plan out what we want before filming.
